Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring — what your life will be! For you are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes. Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” But as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
(James 4:13-17 CSB)
In our culture we plan and ‘sets visions’ daily, fixing events into a calendar and so often fail to seek the Lord’s will. But here God calls this ‘boasting’; acting out of presumption.
If you have children you will see this in action. You tell them they can go to the park…then parks are out of bounds (and don’t tempt them by walking past the swings). One day they are off to school…a few days later you’re homeschooling! Ahh! You say they can have a friend over and BAM! gastro hits the house. They don’t adapt well to sudden change.
But unlike a child with his mind made up, we need to be adaptable and maluble to follow the Holy Spirit. We must drop things if He leads us, being ready to change plans and be guided by Him.
We don’t wanna be so set in OUR OWN plans that we end up missing HIS!
